Physical therapy for the geriatric population focuses on optimizing function for aging adults. As we age, our bodies undergo wear and tear. Although this process is normal, it sometimes leads to pain and disability, causing patients to limit their activity or stop doing what they enjoy. People who live an active lifestyle lose less muscle mass and flexibility as they age. Geriatric physical therapy can improve strength, mobility and balance to help the aging individual build confidence in staying active.
In physical therapy, we focus on your specific needs and goals. Benefits of geriatric physical therapy include restoring mobility, reducing pain, increasing strength, improving balance, decreasing risk of falls and improving overall fitness.
Dementia is indicative of brain cell damage which leads to the deficits in memory, executive functioning, behavior, and temperament. Memory deficits are the hallmark symptom of dementia and short-term memory issues are the first to appear (Arvanitakis & Bennett, 2019). Over time, individuals with dementia experience a progressive decline in cognitive and physical functioning leading to a loss of safety and independence.
A key focus of therapy is working with the patient and caregiver to optimize the patient’s participation in meaningful activities while maintaining safety for everyone involved. Work with the caregiver and patient to identify what communication or cuing strategies are most effective to facilitate these activities. Establish a home exercise program to maintain strength and mobility and help prevent adverse events, including contractures and pressure injuries.
Orthopedic rehabilitation helps people recover from various conditions by restoring their range of motion, muscle strength, and flexibility with less pain.
Orthopedic physical therapists are experts in the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of disorders and dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system, including injuries involving muscle, bone, joint, tendon, ligament, and nerve.
Physical therapist can use various modalities like electrical muscle stimulation/TENS, moist heat/cold packs, taping, splinting/bracing, dry needling, and orthotics
Physical therapy plays a major role to facilitate fast recovery following orthopedic surgery on the hip, knee, shoulder, wrist, hand, neck, foot, ankle, or spine. Post surgery physical therapy can start anywhere from a few hours to a few days after surgery, and in some cases, there may be a period of immobilization following surgery.
There are benefits to a structured pre-surgical or “pre-habilitation” program. This is a program designed by your physical therapist to help you before surgery so that you can have a great outcome after surgery.
Before surgery, the treatment goals of pre-surgery physical therapy are to mentally prepare for surgery, reduce pain and inflammation, restore range of motion, improve muscular control, normalize movement patterns, improve overall well-being and fitness, and gain a good understanding of the exercises that will begin right after surgery.
After surgery, Physical therapy help to optimize post surgery recovery and prevent re-injury. Post surgery physical therapy focuses on reducing swelling, regaining range of motion, regaining lost strength, increasing endurance, prevent post-surgical complications and returning to daily activities.
